It has stood as a witness to history, a setting for love stories both written and yet to unfold. The Mather doesn’t just host events—they’re experiences, unfolding in a venue rich with history and timeless elegance. The ballroom, with its towering ceilings, gleaming floors, and intricate details, feels like something out of a Fitzgerald novel—where champagne glasses clink, and guests dance late into the night. Outside, the garden offers a quiet, intimate space beneath trees that have stood as silent witnesses to events and stories for generations.

With space for up to 175 guests, The Mather offers the perfect balance of grandeur and intimacy. Whether you’re looking for a lavish celebration or a gathering that feels like an extension of home, this venue adapts. Tables and chairs? Of course! A caterer’s kitchen? Ready to go! And then there’s the bar—not just a tucked-away corner for drinks, but a thoughtfully curated space where guests can gather, glasses in hand, as conversations stretch long into the evening. Owners Bill Anderson Jr and Liisa Petersen obtained the building in July 2022, and began extensive renovations to bring the building back to life and open it for the public to enjoy. They contracted local construction company G.E. Builders and began work on the 40,000-square-foot facility as a labor of love for the couple, who embrace the history and significance The Mather has had on the mining industry in our area.

They continue to take steps to restore the building to its original grandeur to be enjoyed by tenants and the public alike. Community involvement and support is something they believe strongly in and have donated the space for events such as: Ishpeming High School Prom, Bell Auxiliary Fundraiser with Westerly Winds Orchestra; Marquette County Emerging Developers, Ishpeming Gus Macker Registration space among a large variety of other community events.

When they’re not putting in long hours working in the building, they reside in Negaunee and also own and operate the Union Station Depot in Negaunee.
